New Years Babies nothing new to this couple

For the second year in row,a Pennsylvania couple have been the proud parents of Gettysburg Hospitals' first new baby of the year.Kyle & Becky Armstrong welcomed their newest daughter into the world at 5:27 am on January 1,2008.Their older daughter,Kaden, was born at the same hospital last year,on January 1,2007!Is anyone else seeing a pattern emerge here?LOL.Mrs. Armstrong commented "It's strange-its all very weird",which leads me to believe they didn't plan it this way.It doesn't matter when they are conceived,I guess, babies just come when they are ready!LOL.I was supposed to have a New Years Baby myself 4 years ago but she came almost a month early.I also have a brother and a sister who share the same birthday three years apart!
Congratulations to the Armstrongs and all the other New Year Baby Mamas and Daddies. And Mrs.Armstrong, from one woman to another-unless you want a trifecta, keep that man off of you for a few months lol.

Racial disparity in ER pain treatment

A study appearing today in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that white people are more likely to receive powerful narcotic medications for pain when being treated at emergency rooms than their non-white counterparts. It revealed that some doctors show preferential treatment to white patients out of the assumption that a minority patient will abuse the more potent opioid pain meds.Ironically, while Hispanics are catching up to whites in the abuse of prescription drugs, blacks are less likely statistically to abuse prescription narcotics. The study was federally funded and data culled from ER visits to 500 hospitals for 4 weeks a year over the course of 13 years. It noted that minorities being treated at ER's for pain are more apt to be given ibuprofen, aspirin or similar nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory pain medications.
Advances in pain management protocol and policy are helping to close the gap, according to doctors involved in the study.

Warriors....come out to play

Like most weekday mornings,I was up very early with my husband and I have said this before, but why is it the really good movies you NEVER see are always on TV very very late at night?Turner Classic Movies usually shows old black & white movies but "Warriors" was on this morning!I love that movie! For those of you who only know it as a videogame and/or are under 30,it is a 1979 cult classic about a NYC gang framed for murder, who have to trek across the burroughs of NY back to their home turf in Coney Island, encountering other gangs, police and various obstacles along their way.It has a stellar soundtrack as do most movies of that era,and it inspired a very difficult videogame over 20 years after its release in theaters. If you have never seen it,you should really try to rent it or catch it on television.TCM channel is best because they air all movies uncut, but Spike channel occasionally airs the TV-edited version.

71 years of SPAM!!!

At a New Years Day event in 1937 at the Hormel Mansion,a guest won $100 for coming up with a clever name for the new canned meat product we now all either love or hate and know as Spam! That decadent jelly coated block of processed pork shoulder meat that you open with a litle key and has a shelf life of about a decade.I am not crazy over it at all,but when I was pregnant and craved salty meats all the time,it did the trick. My husband and daughter,as well as my oldest sister, all like to eat it fried with eggs for breakfast or brunch! Not me,I prefer scrapple,RAPA,thank you!
But it occured to me that Spam is more than just an overprocessed canned meat treat,it is an American icon.Think about it-spam has become a verb as well as a proper noun,in that we call unsolicited email messages selling erectile dysfunction tablets "spam".People who send us that junk are known as "spammers"LOL.Therefore I cannot "hate" on Spam!True enthusiasts insist the can say "Spam" and not "Treet" too.
So how many ways can you think of serving Spam?????Anyone??

In memory of Hank

It's been 55 years today since Hank Williams Sr. was found dead in the back of his chauffered Cadillac in West Virginia by his driver,at age 29.Ironically,the title of his last record release was "I'll never get out of this world alive".My personal favorite song of his was "Your cheating heart",not for any particular reason, just that I think its classic Hank at his best.Old school rockabilly blues! Many of his songs are covered to this day by popular musicians, and many more have tried to copy his style, none come close to the original.

Pain at the pump

For most of this week, the morning news has declared that the price of oil is remaining steady.Great.So if that is the case, why did gas increase on average by ten cents at some places? The weather has been mild for December,so demand should not have risen that much.I know nobody has the answers,I just had to vent about that.
