A legally armed citizen thwarted an armed robbery at an Indiana grocery store on New Years Eve.Charlie Merrill,51,was in the checkout line when a masked man entered the vicinity and demanded cash while holding an employee at gunpoint.Merrill,who has a valid permit to carry a concealed weapon,whipped out his handgun and ordered the robber to get on the floor and chuck his gun,and kept him on the floor unarmed until the police arrived to arrest him.Dwain Smith,19,was jailed in Marion county on various charges.It turns out his gun wasn't loaded but Merrills was!
If this isn't a good argument against more gun restrictions for law-abiding citizens,I don't know what is.Sure,the criminals gun was empty but the intended victims didn't have the luxury of knowing that.Instead of a clean getaway with stacks of cash,Smith got a taste of his own medicine-and later,3 hots and a cot,courtesy of Marion county.Now I am not suggesting everyone over 21 start carrying holsters on their hips-only those who are thoroughly trained in the use of handguns and legally permitted to carry should have them.Unfortunately,there is a uber-liberal anti-gun movement that wants to strip everyone of the right to own and bear arms,and their argument is that it will prevent gun violence-WRONG!It just disarms innocent civilians and leads to a situation where only crooks have guns.Now,maybe some of you are thinking that if Smiths gun had been loaded,he would have started shooting when Merrill produced his weapon,and maybe he would have-but you can bet your sweet bippy if Merrill is qualified to carry a concealed firearm he is a crack shot and he would have gotten a few off before Smith even hit the trigger.Look at it from this point of view-if you are a criminal and you know theres a good chance you will be drawn on by a citizen or store owner packing heat,you are going to think long and hard before you do something stupid.
