The 1995 Honda Civic is number one on the list of top 10 stolen cars in the US and its not just because its an awesome little car!Read on....
As I was watching the VERY early NYC news this morning, they had a report on the bustup of a stolen car ring in the city and commented that 90's Honda models are overwhelmingly easy to steal because they basically have similar lock/ignition mechanisms and even without the right key,a comparable Honda key can be easily filed down to work on another model by a determined thief. They say dealerships have implemented security procedures when a customer requests a replacement key to guard against this, which explains alot.Let me explain...
The Totmom "family fleet"includes a late 90's Honda Civic, and we like it alot because its a reliable car not to mention it gets 36mpg on average.Several months ago my husband lost our only key(dee, dee, dee!!!) and was stranded in Smallsbury,so we called Pohanka and inquired about a replacement-which is simple enough if you have the VIN number. However, they absolutely would NOT do so unless my husband presented proof of ownership(registration or title) and a photo ID,because if they do not verify ownership they can be held liable for your loss if the car is stolen after they sell a key for it.I didnt know that!!!!Needless to say we got our key. So,I have learned something very valuable today-not to mention I know now why our insurance premiums are so high for a little 4 cyl car....
